Go behind the scenes of a Petit Picotin shoot

At Petit Picotin, imagery is at the heart of the experience. Our business is primarily online — you can't see or touch the products before buying them. So we invest heavily in the quality and aesthetic of our photos to reflect reality as closely as possible and spark a genuine love at first sight moment for you. Today, we're taking you behind the scenes of one of our shoot days for our Summer collection. Ready? Let's go!

Advance preparation

Product, prop and set selection

The shoot itself is only the tip of the iceberg. The real organization starts well before the big day and it's considerable! First of all, we need to decide which products will be shot. For the Summer collection, we of course highlighted the new arrivals — striped ponchos, striped towels, cooler bags — as well as products already on the website, reimagined in a summer setting. For the sets and props, we work with a partner agency, Room Service, which tracks down the perfect pieces for us. Each prop is selected to match the products, the outfits and above all the overall mood of the shoot, an atmosphere created and decided in advance by our art director Diane Denoyelle. Nothing is left to chance!

Selection of children and outfits

To get beautiful photos, we work with little models, because a product being worn and in motion is always far more telling than a flat-lay. It allows you to picture it in real life, to see how it moves, how it fits, how it truly looks. Astrid, our founder, then carefully selects the outfits for the 9 children taking part in the shoot, so that the looks harmonize perfectly with the products being shot.

Schedule planning

The schedule of a shoot day is a work of precision. Some children come in the morning, others in the afternoon — keeping them waiting is out of the question! Each time slot is planned in advance so that the day runs smoothly and every child has a great time during the shoot.

The big day

Welcome and set-up

We welcome parents and children directly on location, on a beautiful beach near Marseille. We let the children get used to the surroundings, we dress them and try to make them feel comfortable before stepping in front of the camera. Outdoors, light is everything, so our photographer prepares their equipment accordingly to make the most of the natural light — thankfully, the sun was on our side! All the products are laid out on a large tarpaulin so they are visible and easy to access quickly during the shoot.

1, 2, 3 cheeeese

The goal is to capture natural gestures, spontaneous smiles, genuine bursts of laughter. So the whole team puts the little ones at ease: jokes, funny faces, little games… whatever it takes to get those authentic moments. Meanwhile, our communications team films videos with the children: mini-interviews, unboxing of everything you can fit in our cooler bag, Instagram trends… Plenty of material to keep our social media feeds full of lively, spontaneous and utterly adorable content!

After the shoot

Selection and retouching

After this busy day, comes one of the trickiest steps: photo selection. Because no, unfortunately we can't keep them all! Once the best images have been selected, it's time for retouching. At Petit Picotin, we care deeply about ensuring that the colors of the products on the website accurately reflect reality, because we know just how important that is when shopping online. Light can sometimes slightly alter the shades, so we retouch with precision to make sure what you see on your screen is true to what you'll receive in your mailbox.

Going live

Once the photos have been retouched and approved, they are uploaded to the website according to the launch dates of the new products. The videos and content filmed on the beach in Marseille then feed our Instagram account (@petitpicotin): trends, interviews, behind-the-scenes of the day… All this beautiful sun-drenched content comes to life gradually, week by week. And in a way, that's also the magic of a shoot: one day with your feet in the sand that turns into weeks of content that smells like summer!
