behind the scenes of a capsule collection with Julie

At Petit Picotin, we dream up timeless products designed to last for years without going out of style. Alongside them, our capsule collections bring something new: soft velvet in winter, colorful stripes in spring… Always in limited editions. But how do they come about? We asked Julie, our product manager.

Where do the ideas for
capsule collections come from?

Our ideas come from what inspires us at the moment and from the seasons: fresh stripes for spring or something fluffy for winter.

The idea is to surprise, delight and offer something new in limited quantities.

How long does it take
to go from an idea to finished products?

It can happen very quickly if everything falls into place, or it can take a year. It all depends on the materials, testing, partners…

And we love challenging ourselves with new techniques or collaborations, which can make the process a little longer.

How do you choose the products for each
capsule collection?

We often start with our customers’ favorites, like Marceau or Paulette.

But it’s also a chance to create new products, like the Billie laptop sleeve in the Velvet collection. If customers love it, it could join the permanent collection!

Who do you work with to bring these collections to life?

With Astrid, the founder! We talk a lot, listen to each other and dare to try new things. Then I work with Olivier and Thomas to adjust quantities and keep our feet on the ground. I also ask the Picoteam for their thoughts on the finishing touches.

And then there are our workshops, weavers and sometimes illustrators. Every capsule is a new adventure.

What’s your favorite part of the creative process?

The very beginning, when anything is possible, when we explore ideas and meet potential partners or illustrators… It’s such an exciting phase!

Then there’s the moment we receive the first prototypes and see our ideas come to life!

Any stories you’d like to share?

Haha, I could write a book.

The Moumoute collection gave us a few scares. Everything seemed perfect, but when the prototypes arrived, the colors were wrong… We had a good laugh, then went back to square one.
Even with advance planning, there are always surprises.
