Which bag to choose for the elementary school year?

Starting 1st grade is a big milestone, for kids and parents alike! And among all the questions that come up before the new school year, one keeps coming back: which bag to choose? Too small to fit everything, too heavy to carry, falling apart before the end of the year… we've all experienced the disappointment of a bad choice. So we've put together everything you need to know to find the perfect bag right from the start.

How to choose the right elementary school bag?

Watch out for dimensions

In elementary school, the bag needs to be large enough to hold notebooks, binders, a pencil case, a water bottle and a snack box, without weighing a ton on your child's shoulders. Ideally, we're aiming for a capacity of around 10–12 liters, with good interior organization so everything is easy to find. A well-organized bag also means a more independent child in the evening when packing their backpack!

Betting on durability

An elementary school backpack means several years of school, rain, playgrounds, and all kinds of commutes. So you need to go for a sturdy, water-repellent fabric to protect belongings in rainy weather, solid seams, and padded straps that don't slip. And if the bag is machine washable or easy to clean, even better!

Design and aesthetics

In elementary school, kids have their say — and plenty to say! A backpack they truly love is a backpack they take care not to damage. Go for timeless colors that will stay appealing over time, and think about personalization: a bag with their first name on it is immediately theirs and avoids mix-ups in the cloakroom or at school pickup.

Our favorite

At Petit Picotin, we have a big favorite for the back-to-school season in elementary, and his name is Paul.

Paul is the backpack that checks absolutely every box. Clean and technical at the same time, it is truly well designed for the real life of schoolchildren. Padded back and straps for comfort, easily adjustable shoulder straps, a large zippered main pocket with two compartments so that packing your bag becomes child's play. It has a capacity of 11L, perfect from 1st to 5th grade. Its water-repellent fabric protects notebooks in rainy weather, and a quick wipe is all it takes to clean it every day.

It comes in a solid color version in beautiful timeless colors, but also in a print version with patterns that are hard to resist. And of course, it is personalizable with a first name, because a backpack with your name on it is always 100x more exciting at back-to-school time.

What to put in the elementary school bag?

These are the must-have essentials, but be sure to read the supply list sent by the school — every class has its own requirements! The basics for a well-prepared day: notebooks and binders according to the grade level, a well-stocked pencil case, a water bottle to stay hydrated all day, a snack box for the afternoon snack, and a smock for craft activities — because Friday afternoon painting is unforgiving!

Our tips for making the right choice

We're sharing a few tips to help you avoid regrets at back-to-school time!

- Choose a backpack with padded and adjustable straps — your child's back will thank you.

- Watch out for false friends too: the rolling backpack generally weighs 1 kg more and forces the child to keep their back in constant torsion to pull it. As for the shoulder bag, it is not recommended either, as all the weight ends up on one shoulder.

- Think about interior organization: multiple compartments are the guarantee of finding the right notebook on the first try.

- Go for a durable bag rather than a trendy one that won't last the season.

- And of course, personalize it at the time of purchase — in the school yard, all backpacks look the same!
