Activity ideas for my 6-month-old baby

Having a 6-month-old baby means a daily life full of discoveries. Every day, they grab everything within reach, observe the objects around them, listen to sounds and explore with their mouth. Sometimes you wonder what you can offer them to keep them busy… and often, it's the little simple things that amaze them the most. No need for a complicated schedule: a few easy, everyday activities are enough to stimulate their development.

Playing with textures

No need to buy lots of toys. A few everyday objects will do: a soft swaddle , a soft rubber or fabric ball, a piece of waffle fabric or a small linen square, a clean and slightly damp sponge. Place these objects in a small basket and let your baby explore at their own pace. They can shake, touch, put things in their mouth… and you can carefully observe their reactions.

Tip: change the contents of the sensory basket every week. Your baby will love discovering new textures and it will help renew their interest.

Vary the surfaces

On the floor, use different textures for your baby's hands and feet: a play mat, a thick towel, a firm cushion or a small non-slip mat. Each texture offers a different sensation to their feet and hands and stimulates their motor and sensory development.

Encouraging motor skills

The famous "tummy time"

"Tummy time", meaning time spent on their tummy, is essential for strengthening the neck, shoulders and arms. A few minutes, several times a day, is enough. To make the exercise more enjoyable, place a colorful toy in front of them, or lie down facing them to encourage them.

Reaching and rolling over

Place a toy or a comfort toy just out of reach and let them try to grab it. You can gently help them roll over if needed, guiding their movements with your hands. Every little effort is a victory! Smile at them, encourage them in your own way… these simple moments are precious and create a real bond between the two of you.

Playing with their feet and hands

Encourage your baby to clap their hands on objects, gently hit cushions or grab their feet. These simple gestures strengthen coordination and help them better discover their body.

Tip: a comfortable mat and colorful objects make these moments more fun and motivating.

Playing with sounds to awaken their hearing

Experiment with everyday objects

Babies are fascinated by sounds. At 6 months, they start to identify rhythms and different noises. A few simple ideas to awaken their hearing at home:

- a spoon tapped on a metal bowl
- a small bottle filled with rice or lentils
- a rattle or a musical toy

Let your baby discover sounds by handling the objects, and join in by tapping too to create an interaction.

Singing and talking

Your voice is their favorite instrument. Vary your intonations, make up little nursery rhymes or repeat the same phrases with different accents. Sound rituals develop their auditory attention. Repeat sounds and songs regularly. Repetition is essential for strengthening their memory and comprehension.

The mirror and body awareness

The magic mirror

Seeing themselves in a mirror or touching their feet is a fascinating milestone at 6 months. Set your baby up in front of a safe mirror and let them explore their reflection. They will smile, reach out their hands, move their arms and observe their expressions. It's a moment that completely captures their attention and delights them.

Naming body parts

While your baby plays or while you change them, name their hands, feet, ears, tummy… and let them touch at the same time. This way they learn the words associated with the gestures and start to find their way around their body. You can also mimic their expressions and smiles for an even more connected moment.

Reading and visual discovery

Books

Even if your baby doesn't understand words yet, they love looking at pictures and listening to your voice. Reading stimulates their attention, memory and language learning. Favor books that are sturdy, easy to turn and chew-friendly, with colorful pictures to catch their eye and awaken their curiosity.

Guided observation

Show them an object or a color and describe it: "Look at the red! And the round shape?". These little phrases help your baby associate words with objects, while also strengthening the bond with you. You can even incorporate it into a specific moment of the day to create a ritual with them.

Everyday activities

Bath time

Everyday life is full of little discoveries that babies love, and sometimes it takes very little to turn these moments into learning opportunities. Take bath time, for example: between splashing, water play and floating toys, your baby discovers the sensations of water, learns to coordinate their movements and develops their fine motor skills. Take the opportunity to talk about what they're doing, name objects and gestures, laugh with them… these small, simple interactions enrich their vocabulary.

Diaper change

Naming gestures, showing clothing, letting them touch the swaddle… this moment becomes a true moment of closeness and learning. These small, simple interactions are what allow your baby to discover their body, learn new words and build an even stronger bond with you.

Outings

Rustling leaves, colorful flowers, street noises… During a walk, your baby discovers a rich and fascinating world. Take these moments to talk about what they see, name the colors, shapes and sounds, and invite them to touch or reach out toward what interests them. Even a simple walk becomes a real discovery ground: they learn to observe, listen and understand their environment.

And for outings, pack the little baby bag: comfort toy, diapers, and the personalized linen health record cover, always within reach in case of need during the outing.
