Which bag to choose for the start of preschool?

Starting preschool is a big moment, for children and parents alike! And among the thousand questions we ask ourselves, one keeps coming up: which bag should you choose? Too big, too small, not sturdy enough… we've all experienced the disappointment of a bag that doesn't last the school year. So we've put together everything you need to know to make the right choice from the start.

How to choose the right preschool bag?

Watch out for dimensions

In preschool, you don't need an XXL bag. The ideal is a bag big enough to hold the essentials: a water bottle, a snack box, a small change of clothes and possibly a comfort toy for the youngest ones. The bag should not extend beyond the child's back length. We generally aim for between 20 and 35 cm in height depending on age.

Betting on durability

A preschool bag means 182 school days a year, being tossed around in the playground, puddles and sandpits. Safe to say you need a tough fabric! Go for a water-repellent cotton that holds up against moisture, solid seams and adjustable straps that don't slip. And ideally, a machine-washable bag, because accidents happen.

Design and aesthetics

Let's be honest: your child has a say in the matter. A bag they love is a bag they'll agree to wear without negotiation in the morning. Go for timeless colors you won't grow tired of, and think about personalization — a bag with their name embroidered on it is immediately theirs, and it avoids mix-ups at school!

Our selection of preschool bags

The Raphaël bag

Raphaël is the preschool backpack par excellence. With its structured shape, wide opening and waterproof fabric, it is perfect for little ones who need a bag that is easy to use and resistant to small accidents. It's the perfect accessory for carrying a pouch, a notebook and even the water bottle without weighing too heavily on your little ones' shoulders. Practical, well thought out and customizable with your child's name, it is often the first bag children are truly proud of. A true classic that always makes an impression on the first day of school.

The Roméo bag

Roméo is the backpack your little ones will love to carry — and #Juliette won't say otherwise! Its urban-chic, clean-cut look gives it a style you never tire of seeing head out to school every morning. Compact and lightweight, it still easily fits the water bottle, the snack box and the comfort toy without hesitation. It stands up to rain, sandpits and all the everyday adventures, and is machine washable when the damage gets too serious. Customizable with your little one's name, it's the perfect bag to start preschool on the right foot.

The Diego bag

Diego is the big brother of the family. He offers a little more space while staying lightweight. His timeless look, inspired by the bags we used to carry as teenagers, gives him a reassuring and sturdy feel. Perfect for kids who need a little more room or for those who already want to feel "grown-up". Like all our backpacks, he is customizable, machine washable and made from durable materials.

What to put in the preschool bag?

These are the essential must-haves, but keep in mind that every school has its own guidelines! Be sure to read the back-to-school letter before getting everything ready — some schools have specific rules about what is and isn't allowed. The basics for a well-prepared day: a water bottle to stay hydrated all day long, a snack box for the 10 o'clock snack, a full change of clothes (especially for the youngest ones!), the comfort toy and/or pacifier if needed.

Our tips to make the right choice

We're sharing our tips to help you avoid the classic pitfalls!

- Check the dimensions required by the school — some have specific guidelines on bag size.

- Choose a bag with adjustable, padded straps so your child is truly comfortable.

- Avoid overly complex fastenings: in preschool, independence also means having a bag your child can open and close on their own.

- Think about personalization from the moment of purchase — at school, all bags look the same!

- And finally, invest in a quality bag from the start: a good bag lasts several years and follows your child well beyond preschool.
