First-grade books: our selection for learning to read

Starting first grade marks a major milestone: that of the first words decoded, the first stories read independently… and sometimes the first "Look, I can read this book all by myself!". To support your child in this learning journey, the choice of books is essential. The goal is not only to help them improve their reading, but also to make them want to open a book again and again.

How to choose the right first-grade book?

At the start of first grade, learning to read requires a great deal of concentration. A book that is too difficult can quickly discourage a child, while a well-adapted book allows them to build confidence. A good first-grade book generally offers: simple and progressive vocabulary, short sentences, large enough print, plenty of illustrations to help understand the story, and subjects that speak to 6 or 7-year-old children. The most important thing remains to respect your child's pace. Some will already devour complete stories, while others will prefer to re-read the same picture book several times. Both are perfectly normal.

The best first-grade books for learning to read

Sami and Julie: the essential first reading series

It's impossible to talk about first-grade books without mentioning Sami and Julie. This collection accompanies children throughout their learning journey thanks to different difficulty levels. The stories are short, reassuring and close to their everyday life: school, family, holidays, animals... Each new book allows them to progress without rushing ahead, which helps young readers build confidence.

I'm in First Grade

The I'm in First Grade collection follows the adventures of characters who experience exactly the same things as your child: the start of school, new friends, school trips, the small daily challenges… The texts are accessible and allow children to identify easily with the characters. It is often an excellent gateway to making them want to read.

Mini-Loup: adventures full of humor

With his little mischief and his good humor, Mini-Loup has been a favorite for several generations. The stories are fun, easy to follow and allow children to read while enjoying the adventures of the famous little wolf.

Ourse et Lapin

The Ourse et Lapin books offer gentle, funny and heartwarming stories. The duo works perfectly: the dialogues are simple, the illustrations are very present and the stories help develop comprehension while remaining accessible. A lovely collection for children who love stories filled with friendship.

Le Petit Nicolas

Some stories from Le Petit Nicolas can be read independently at the end of first grade, or shared with a parent as a two-voice read-aloud. The adventures of Nicolas and his friends remain timeless and allow children to tackle slightly longer texts as they grow in confidence.

Anatole Latuile

Towards the end of first grade or during the summer holidays, Anatole Latuile is an excellent transition to slightly richer reading. Thanks to its many illustrations and its humor, this series is enormously popular with children who are beginning to read with greater ease.

Books to discover great personalities

Children are often very curious. Collections that tell the lives of famous figures allow them to learn while reading. You can, for example, choose books adapted for young audiences dedicated to: Martin Luther King, Marie Curie, Rosa Parks, Leonardo da Vinci, Frida Kahlo. These illustrated biographies open the door to many discussions while enriching their general knowledge.
