Sleepover: 10 ideas for a great night

A sleepover is a chance to laugh with friends, share secrets under the covers and make lovely memories. You don’t need to turn the living room into an amusement park: a few good ideas are enough to make the kids happy.

Planning your child’s first sleepover or simply looking for fresh activities? Here are 10 ideas for a great sleepover!

10 ideas for an unforgettable sleepover

1. Choose a theme to set the tone

To start, why not choose a theme to tie the evening together? The kids can wear pajamas featuring their favorite patterns, or enjoy a party themed around animals, stars, superheroes or their favorite imaginary world. No need to match everything: a few cushions, some garlands and homemade decorations are enough to set the scene. An extra touch? Let the kids choose the theme together before the big day.

2. Create a cozy sleeping area

A few mattresses, blankets and pillows and stuffed animals are all it takes to turn the living room into a little overnight campsite!

If your child is having friends over, make sure they have somewhere comfortable to sleep. And if your child is sleeping at a friend’s house, a bag and a personalized toiletry bag will help them find their things easily and remember everything when it’s time to come home!

3. Organize a pajama treasure hunt

To kick off the fun, set up a little treasure hunt around the house. Hide clues under a cushion, behind a book or near a stuffed animal, then let the kids solve the riddles to find the final treasure. It can be something simple: a bag of popcorn, stickers, a little bracelet or a funny note. Adjust the difficulty to the children’s ages and set boundaries for where they can search so the hunt doesn’t turn into a race through the entire house!

4. Set up a craft activity

A craft activity offers a little break between more energetic games. Invite the kids to decorate sleep masks, make friendship bracelets or personalize little cards to take home. Get the supplies ready in advance: paper, markers, stickers, ribbons and glue.

And to keep clothes free of stains, at home or at school, try our personalized Petit Picotin school smock : perfect for letting little artists get creative without worrying about splashes!

5. Plan games that get everyone laughing

For a great sleepover, there’s no need to pack the schedule with activities: a few well-chosen games can keep the whole group entertained. Alternate quiet games with more energetic activities.  Here are a few classics that are easy to set up:

- Charades: act out an animal, a job or a character without speaking.
- Telephone:
whisper a sentence from one child to the next and hear what it becomes...
- Name that tune:
recognize a song as quickly as possible.

6. Plan a movie night at home

Pajamas, cushions, a blanket and popcorn: a movie night at home is always a sleepover favorite. Let the kids choose from a few age-appropriate movies or cartoons.

To avoid endless negotiations, offer two or three options instead of browsing the entire catalog for an hour. You can even make little movie tickets and set up a snack corner. Just remember to keep the movie to a reasonable length if the kids need to fall asleep afterward.

7. Create a photo booth to capture the memories

To capture the evening, set up a little photo corner with a colorful backdrop, a few props and funny signs. The kids can pose alone, in pairs or all together. You can make the props from cardboard: giant glasses, mustaches, crowns or speech bubbles. The results are bound to be fun, even if no one stays still for more than three seconds!

8. Make a delicious snack

A sleepover is also a chance to share a special snack! Mini pizzas, fruit skewers, sandwiches or homemade cookies: let the kids put their own snacks together. Just keep everyone’s allergies and dietary needs in mind, and choose easy recipes.

And to cook without worrying about little splashes, dress the kids in our personalized Petit Picotin kitchen aprons! When it’s time to eat, our personalized cloth napkins will add a lovely touch to this snack with friends.

9. Make time for stories and heart-to-hearts

Once they’re tucked under the blankets, let the kids enjoy the moment at their own pace. They’ll surely have a thousand things to tell each other, stories to share and plenty of giggles! There’s no need to plan every minute: let the conversation flow naturally. It’s often these little spontaneous moments that make the best sleepover memories.

10. Finish with a special breakfast

The fun doesn’t have to end at bedtime! If the kids are staying overnight, plan a relaxed breakfast to keep the good times going in the morning. Fruit, toast, yogurt, pancakes or hot chocolate: choose a few easy-to-prepare options.

For a thoughtful finishing touch, each child can take home the craft they made the day before or a little keepsake photo. A lovely reminder of their first overnight adventure with friends!

How to plan a sleepover for kids of different ages

No two sleepovers are alike. The children’s ages, independence and experience sleeping away from home all have a big impact on the plans.

Keep the evening short, with just a few guests, simple games, a story and a reassuring bedtime routine. For a first sleepover, some children may prefer to be picked up before bedtime.

Kids usually enjoy treasure hunts, craft activities, board games and movie nights. They can also take a bigger part in the preparations.

Give them more room to choose what they want to do: quizzes, team games, a music playlist, making private videos or chatting with friends, within the rules you’ve agreed on together.

These age ranges are just a guide: some children will be ready to sleep at a friend’s house quite young, while others will need more time.
What matters most is that everyone feels comfortable.

The checklist so you don’t forget anything before the sleepover

Before the guests arrive, remember to check the following:

- Confirm how many children are coming and their arrival and pickup times.

- Ask parents for useful information: allergies, dietary needs, sleep habits and contact details.

- Set out the sleeping arrangements, blankets and pillows.

- Prepare any snacks, dinner and breakfast, along with the supplies needed for activities.

A little planning ahead means you can enjoy the evening without rushing around at the last minute.

A great sleepover is all about making happy memories

To host a memorable sleepover, you don’t need spectacular decorations or a minute-by-minute schedule. A few well-chosen activities, a cozy place to sleep, tasty things to share and time to laugh together are all it takes.

And if the kids leave with heads full of memories — and perhaps feeling a little tired the next day — then mission accomplished!
