The first day of school is a big adventure, whether it's the very first time or a new year —
one thing is certain: the outfit of the day matters.

Because they need to be able to sit cross-legged, run, jump, but also take off their sweater on their own or find their coat at the end of the day, we're sharing a few practical tips for choosing a back-to-school outfit that is both pretty, comfortable, and suited to children's needs.

a comfortable, soft, and practical back-to-school outfit

Children spend their day running, sitting on the floor, playing outside or in the classroom — so you might as well choose an outfit that's as beautiful as it is sturdy.

To find a great back-to-school outfit, you should:

• favor natural, supple fabrics that let the body breathe, like cotton, linen, or a soft knit as gentle as a caress.

• choose comfortable clothes that don't restrict movement

• clothes that are as easy to put on as to take off independently, to encourage autonomy

layering up: a smart habit
for the new school year

At back-to-school time, it's the in-between season. It's neither summer nor fall, and yet it's cool in the morning, warm at midday, and there's a little breeze in the late afternoon. It reminds us that vacation is over.

That's where the layering principle becomes a magical ally:

• a short-sleeved t-shirt underneath

• a sweatshirt or a cardigan to put on or take off quickly and easily

• a jacket or windbreaker if it's a bit chilly

It's the freedom to adapt to the weather without having to change completely. It's simpler for children at recess, naptime, or during physical activities: they can undress on their own (and the teachers will thank you!).

what if we let them choose (a little) their back-to-school outfit?

The back-to-school season is their moment. Even very young, children have their preferences: a twirly dress, or a sweater like dad's… so letting them have a say in their outfit can help them feel proud and make the new school year more joyful and reassuring.

You can offer them two or three outfit options prepared in advance, and you can also add accessories like a favorite hairclip, or a pair of fun socks.

Having a say in their outfit means owning their back-to-school experience, building confidence, and taking a small step toward independence.

a name kept safe, inside the clothes

Because a sweater can quickly end up in another classroom or a cardigan might decide to go on an adventure to the other side of the playground, it is more than recommended to label your little ones' clothes. A sewn or iron-on label, or simply a discreet fabric marker on the inner tag, and voilà — clothes will find their way back all on their own (or almost).

And if there's one product not to miss, it would be this one: soft, practical, and embroidered with their name, it's as easy to put on as it is to spot in the school hallways!

And for school supplies, same story!

At Petit Picotin, first names are our thing.
To never lose their belongings again, you can stick on pretty labels, matching their backpack!
