3 natural remedies against lice

Lice… just talking about them makes you itch a little, doesn't it? Don't panic — every family goes through it at some point. At school, at the nursery or during activities, these little intruders love travelling from head to head. The good news is that with a few simple habits and natural methods, you can get rid of them quickly!

how do I know if my child has lice?

Lice are true masters of disguise… but certain signs don't lie. If your child frequently scratches their head, especially behind the ears or at the nape of the neck, that's already a clue. A quick visual check in natural light can also help: nits are tiny white specks attached to the hair shaft, difficult to remove with your fingers. Also look for small red spots on the scalp, or listen if your child says it "tingles" or that they feel tickling in their hair.

Coconut oil is a classic that works really well thanks to its very thick texture. It coats the lice, blocks their breathing and suffocates them naturally.

Bonus: it also makes hair slippery, which prevents lice from gripping the scalp. Apply a generous layer to the roots and lengths, then leave on for 30 minutes to 1 hour before running through with a fine-tooth comb.

Coconut oil

Let's be honest: it's not the most pleasant-smelling treatment… but it's remarkably effective! Mix lukewarm water with white vinegar, then dampen the hair with the mixture. Leave it on for 15 minutes under a towel or cling film. The acidity helps loosen nits and makes combing through much easier.

Bonus: it smooths the hair cuticles and adds shine. Two in one!

Baking soda

It's the natural enemy of nits. The most radical method is to lightly sprinkle it on the scalp, massage for a few minutes, then rinse before using the comb. For children, a gentler version is preferred: dilute a little baking soda in warm water, dip the comb in it and carefully detangle. Effective and less harsh on the scalp.

Simple habits that really make a difference:

- Tie hair back to limit direct contact
- Regularly check brushes and combs
- Wash cuddly toys, sheets, covers, rugs or textiles at 60°C minimum (if contaminated)
- Avoid sharing hats, caps, scarves or accessories
