The evening routine for a calmer start to the school year

After the long summer days, returning to school requires a little adjustment time. Days become more structured again, wake-up calls come earlier, and children need to get back into their habits. To help them through this transition smoothly, nothing works better than a children's evening routine. Predictable and reassuring, it allows the day to end calmly. Here are our tips for setting up a simple routine suited to the whole family.

Why establish an evening routine?

Children love knowing what to expect. A series of repeated gestures each evening gives them reference points and helps them feel safe. A children's evening routine can, in particular:

- make bedtime easier
- limit negotiations at bedtime
- encourage quality sleep
- make mornings calmer
- gradually build independence.

No need for a complicated programme: a few regular habits are enough to make a difference.

The key steps of an effective routine

Starting the routine at a fixed time

As the new school year approaches, try to gradually get back to regular schedules. Ideally, start the routine about an hour before bedtime. This time allows your child to slow down, leave behind the pace of the day and get ready for sleep in a calm way. Even at weekends, keeping to relatively consistent times helps maintain a good rhythm.

Preparing tomorrow's things

Just a few minutes are enough to avoid morning stress. Together, prepare: the next day's clothes, the school bag, the pencil case, the water bottle, the snack box if needed. Your child takes part in the organisation and gradually gains independence. And morning departures are often much smoother too!

Taking a calm moment together as a family

Once the preparations are done, it's time to unwind. Screens are gradually switched off and gentle activities take over:

- a puzzle
- colouring
- a few drawings
- a story
- a chat about the day.

These little moments allow children to slow down naturally before bedtime.

The bedtime ritual

Every family has its own habits, but certain gestures reassure almost all children. After the bath and tooth brushing, it's time to head to the bedroom. A story, a hug, a few gentle words... These little rituals, repeated each evening, create a reassuring environment. For younger children, finding their favourite comfort toy is often an essential step. A true everyday companion, it helps children drift off to sleep and cope more calmly with changes, such as the start of the new school year.

Reading a story before bedtime

The evening story is a wonderful ritual. Just a few minutes are enough to develop a love of books, enrich vocabulary and share a special moment as a family. Sometimes let your child choose their own story: it makes them an active part of their routine and gives them even more reason to look forward to this moment every evening.

Adapting the routine to your child's age

A children's evening routine is not set in stone. It evolves with them. For a preschool-age child, the ritual will often be shorter and heavily guided. At primary school age, your child can gradually take on more: packing their school bag, filling their water bottle with your help, choosing their clothes or checking their pencil case. The goal is not perfection, but to help them grow in confidence, step by step.
