6 décor tips for your baby's room

Are you about to give birth? Or do you simply want a change for your child's room? Here are our 6 tips for decorating your baby's room. From wall colors to storage ideas, pick from our selection of décor tips.

A well-placed bed

Before wondering whether the color of the play mat will match the curtains, first think about where to place your child's bed. Because they will spend a (very) large part of their life there, the bed placement is THE first step when designing your baby's room décor.

Here are a few tips:

- Position the bed so that the baby's head is against a solid wall. The bed should not "float" in the middle of the room.

- If possible, let the child have a view of the door so they are not startled by people coming and going.

- Avoid placing your child's bed near the heater or hanging wall shelves or frames above it.

Of course, you will do what you can depending on the layout of the room.

Choose soft, warm colors

Always keep in mind that soft colors invite calm while bright colors stimulate. The younger the child, the more they need quiet. Earthy colors (terracotta, honey), warm colors (caramel, bronze, sand) or pastel colors (dusty pink, aqua) are therefore excellent choices. You can also opt for a lovely wallpaper used as a subtle accent. It will add character to your baby's room décor.

And if the choice feels too overwhelming, don't panic: go for white walls and add pops of color with curtains, posters or wall decorations.

On the topic of paint, it's best to finish painting several weeks before the baby arrives to avoid exposing them to VOCs (volatile substances in solvents). Ideally, opt for eco-friendly paints, which are healthier and more environmentally responsible.

Practical and stylish storage solutions

In the first few weeks, a bed, an armchair, a changing table and a small wardrobe are enough. Then come play mats, soft toys and games… and you'll need to rethink your baby's room décor with easy and modular storage.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

- Keep toys visible to encourage independence.

- Think about open shelves with baskets to organize each type of toy.

- Some toys can also serve as decorative elements in the room.

- Don't forget to add a small bookcase at their height to store their first books. If space allows, set up a small reading corner on the floor with a mattress and a few cushions.

Eco-friendly and unique furniture

Decorating the baby's room also means choosing the furniture.

- Eco-friendly furniture:
Certified NF Environnement. In addition to having soft, comforting tones, it is better for your health and manufactured with energy efficiency in mind.

- Second-hand furniture:
More affordable, more eco-friendly and unique. A vintage piece is often THE item that gives your baby's room its character. And for simpler or worn furniture, a coat of paint and it becomes an iconic piece.

Warm flooring and lighting

Warm yellow light rather than white light, several bedside lamps rather than an overhead light: the choice of lighting can make all the difference and transform the room into a real cocoon.

Good to know: children are not afraid of the dark before 2 years old. No need for a night light during the first years.

As for the floor, nothing beats a lovely cozy rug to make the room warm and welcoming. Your child will drop their first building blocks on it… and you will lie down on it to read them their first stories.

Wall and tabletop décor ideas

The walls are painted, the furniture is nicely arranged, the bed is made. The decoration of the baby's room is almost complete. All that's left is to think about those little finishing touches that make all the difference.

On the bed?
Opt for bedding in 100% cotton swaddle, much loved by little ones as it is so soft. And as the child grows, a few classic cushions or ones shaped like an ice cream or a cloud placed on the bed will brighten up the baby's room décor.

On the wall?
A poster, a balloon, a bird. A corner with a few photos of loved ones, siblings, Grandma Brigitte. A sweet little word in a sticker.

On the shelves?
A photo from their birth, their birth announcement, some decorative little animals, soft toys and a few books lined up that they'll soon want to leaf through.
